Think of all the independent brokers you know. If you’ve been in real estate for a while, then you probably know quite a few — it’s one of the only industries where independents have been able to carve their own paths with assurance and establish a brand without piggybacking on another, bigger company.
And if you’ve been in real estate for a while, then you also know that indie brokers are one of the most eclectic groups on the planet. The commonality of “establishing my own brokerage” is enhanced with the many different reasons, approaches, standards, mission and vision, and other factors that comprise a business plan.
But one other thing that many indie brokers all have in common is often a frustration with real estate’s status quo and the desire to produce something better — something different. Kendyl Young, who founded DIGGS in Glendale, California, in 2013, knows that experience well. “Many indie brokerages are borne of a high-producing agent’s frustration with their brokerage and brokerage options,” she explained.
Frustration and idealism can only take you so far. A successful indie broker has to have expertise in management, marketing, budgeting, local economics and many more facets of the business. And sometimes you might not even know what you need to know.

At the Indie Broker Summit at Inman Connect San Francisco, you’ll learn what you don’t know (and don’t know you don’t know) and start filling in those gaps by listening to peers who have been there, done that, survived it and thrived from it. Young will be moderating the speakers and discussions on stage on Tuesday, July 17; the event runs from July 17 through 20 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
Sitting down side-by-side with other committed indie brokers who have been through the fire is the best way to ensure that you’re doing the best for your own indie brokerage. Panelists will discuss recruiting and retaining talent, marketing strategies, value propositions and differentiation, culture and much more.
Indie brokers want to forge their own paths because they are both independent and idealistic — they know they can elevate the industry with their work. The Indie Broker Summit “is an opportunity to give these idealistic agents and independent brokers the means to perform to their idealism or practicality,” said Young.
Don’t miss your opportunity to hear all about how the larger indie brokerages built their brands, how they’ve become relevant and more valuable than the competition in market after market — then take some of those ideas home and do it yourself. It’s happening at Inman Connect San Francisco as just one part of a week of networking, education and celebrating independence.
