The study of economics involves just as much mastery over the vagaries of human behavior as it does market-based understandings — which is why Daryl Fairweather, who served as a senior behavioral economist at Amazon before landing at Redfin as the company’s chief economist, is such a perfect match for Redfin.
“The housing market is a perfect example of how psychology affects the economy,” Fairweather said in an announcement when she was hired at Redfin. “For most of us, buying a home is the biggest financial decision we’ll make in our lifetime, and yet traditionally, homebuyers have little experience and limited education on the process or the market. Emotions play a large role in real estate.”
Fairweather is going to be speaking at Inman Connect New York, January 29 through February 1 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square, where she’ll discuss what agents, brokers and other real estate professionals can expect from the housing economy in 2019.
She’s also worked as an economist and analyst at Intensity Corporation, Morgan Stanley and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, which involved research on the housing foreclosure crisis wherein Fairweather interviewed more than 100 homeowners facing foreclosure about their experience. This research prompted her toward her higher education credentials — a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago, with an emphasis in behavioral economics.
Fairweather will join several other housing-market experts on stage in a panel discussion about what the 2019 housing market has in store for buyers, sellers and the people who help them facilitate their transactions. Don’t miss your chance to hear firsthand about what you need to be thinking about in the next year of business — and beyond.
“Homeownership is something that makes people more connected to their neighborhoods, their communities, it helps them share in the prosperity of their communities and their neighborhoods,” Fairweather told Inman in October. “It’s emotional for me, too.”
