Should NAR raise dues? Tell us what you think

Sound off: What do you think of the National Association of Realtors’ proposal to raise annual dues for its 1.3 million members?

The trade group’s 2019 budget proposal calls for a $35.5 million jump in annual spending for political advocacy, a transaction management platform for members and other initiatives. To pay for the increase, NAR seeks to raise dues by $30 in 2019 with additional built-in increases of 2.5 percent per year beginning in 2020.

The trade group’s dues currently stand at $120, so the requested increase is a 25 percent hike to $150. The proposal has incited controversy and dissent in some quarters.

The Houston Association of Realtors in particular has called for NAR to reallocate its resources — including a windfall from the DocuSign IPO — instead of raising dues. NAR countered that the “complex challenges” the real estate industry is facing “require a comprehensive solution,” a solution the dues increase will fund.

NAR’s 800-member board of directors will vote on the 2019 budget proposal when it meets on May 19, at the conclusion of the trade group’s midyear conference, the Realtors Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo, in Washington, D.C.
