You’ve maybe heard me say, “Your head is a scary place to be.”

This is especially true for you as an independent contractor – someone who has to motivate yourself every day to accomplish goals.

Do you spend too much time fighting self-talk?

If you said yes, you’re essentially putting obstacles between you and success. The key to overcoming those obstacles is changing your negative thoughts into positive thoughts, controlling your attitude, and focusing on actions that align with your goals.

Mindset matters

Your attitude is all about how you view the world.

We teach specific techniques to all of our coaching members, which I also personally practice, that help us view any situation in a positive way and immediately change our state of mind.

Below are three of the most effective ways to develop a positive attitude that we teach.

Use self-talk skillfully

When things don’t go as planned, it’s easy to get in your head and start beating yourself up.

This is a vicious downward spiral and a scary place we’ve all been. So, how do we change this vicious cycle? Let me give you a specific example.

My son is a superstar tennis player (I may be a bit biased) and we’ve found that getting rid of negative self-talk before a match is crucial to securing a positive outcome. So, before every match he repeats these powerful affirmations.

Affirmations or positive self-talk are a great way to banish negative thoughts and align your actions with your goals. As you practice, notice how your attitude affects those around you.

Focus on growth

You’ve probably heard the quote, “What you focus on, expands.”

This is absolutely true! Shifting focus is a key technique for developing a positive attitude. How you view situations entirely dictates your attitude.

For example, if you’re on a listing appointment and don’t get the listing, do you ask yourself, “Ugh! Why does this keep happening to me?”

Instead, what if you asked yourself, “What can I do differently to earn the business I know I deserve?”

When you ask yourself a better, deeper question, you get a higher quality answer that supports learning and growth. It’s such a small change in language that makes a huge, powerful change in your attitude.

Leverage your physiology

Try this out: Stand up, raise your hands in the air, look up and smile as big as you can.

How do you feel? Silly, ok sure. But notice how happy you feel.

Deepak Chopra taught me that there’s a connection between your body and your mind. If you move your body in a powerful way, it instantly impacts your attitude. Every movement you make affects your mind.

So walk with your head high, shoulders back and a big smile on your face.

Try these three powerful techniques for seven days and then share the results with me. I’d love to hear how they changed your life. Comment on our Facebook page or send me a tweet or reach out to me on Instagram. I’m always interested in hearing how these tips are working for you.
