Most real estate agents who develop enough of a market presence to start leading a team are excellent at selling real estate and generating leads — but they might have zero experience running a business, hiring and firing people, and generally operating as a CEO instead of as a sales facilitator.
So when something happens that derails the success of a seemingly streamlined team, it can blindside the leader. “When something implodes on a team, they don’t know the proper job structure,” explains Jennifer Berman of Berman and Pollinger. “Is Suzie doing what she’s supposed to be doing, or is she overlapping with Jane, or have their roles been reversed? What are the tasks assigned to each team member, and is that the highest or best use of their time?”

Berman is an expert at building big celebrity teams in the luxury real estate space, and she says that systems are key to making sure you’re doing the right things at the right times for the right reasons. “What systems do you have in place to sustain a team?” she asks. “If you’re not using the proper contact management system, if you don’t have a website that takes the leads to feed your ‘kids’ — your agents — then you don’t have a team.”
She teaches her celeb clients the ins and outs of systems, personality profiles, compensation plans and even how to run an effective staff meeting — and she’ll be sharing how to shore up a team that’s got issues at Inman Connect San Francisco.
