Jimmy Choi and Joseph Bautista, founders of My Occupational Defense, know something about dangerous jobs. Choi works in the emergency department as a doctor and Bautista worked for the Department of Homeland Security, and they’ve both encountered situations and people that they needed to neutralize or escape — the main reason they founded their company to teach people how to defend themselves at work.
This is a topic especially pertinent to real estate agents, and Choi and Bautista will take the stage at Inman Connect San Francisco for an interactive session where they’ll show agents a few ways to defend themselves hand-to-hand. The conference takes place July 17 through 20 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
Initially launched as an endeavor to help people in health care fields manage dangerous people, My Occupational Defense has worked with tech companies, financial businesses, community health centers, college sororities and groups that help victims of domestic abuse. “Our goal is to translate self-defense to an everyday skill set,” explained Choi. “Make it analogous to driving a car or unclogging a drain.”
For agents, part of that skill set should involve screening and qualifying people before meeting with them in person. “There are a number of different ways you can screen people,” noted Bautista. “You should be able to ask 10 questions that let you know whether or not a buyer is serious. What they’re pre-approved for, who their lender is, why they want to move — if people can’t answer basic questions like that, it should raise a flag of some sort.”
